Workshop textile and fashion students, Estonia
The one week workshop was inititated by the Estonian Academy of Arts and formed a collaboration between Tartu University students and students from the Estonian Academy in Tallinn. It became a meeting of mixed views from fashion and textile students and a meeting of Dutch and Estonian culture... Simone made the assignment of creating new skins, skins as the interactive layer between exterior and interior, between inside and outside, body and space. As results, inspiring skins appeared. From landscapes as the skins of our earth, to new skins inspired by animals; regular patterns, hard outershells, soft touch, open or protective, attractive or rejective surfaces.
All were created against the background of lively fast moving Tallinn, and quiet, peacefull Tartu. The lovely houses from wood showed their peeling-off skin, presenting many layers of history, renewed with fresh colours or retained in older paints. The stage of beautifull wintertrees entirely covered up with a refined snow wrapping (with cristals like sugar candy) completed the special atmosphere.
Students were rediscovering materials, remaking wasted materials and renewed thinking on materials and fabrics through the hands on process. The soul of crafty making, many ways to shape techniques made the ideas moving. A wonderfull experience with thanks to all students, professors and managers of both educations!
